I only go out for pizza when I know it's going to be better than making it myself, and Toscana definitely makes the cut. Fresh, made-to-order thin crust pizza with quality ingredients at a price that doesn't break my wallet? Whether you eat-in (everyone is so friendly, you feel like family) or take out, Toscana is always on the top of my list when I get a pizza craving.

The story of thin-crust pizza in the greater South Bend area ends here. After Hot Box closed, we now have three go-to thin crusts, each so different in taste they're worth ordering on a whim: Tony Sacco's, Toscana and Polito's. This review is a glowing endorsement of Toscana after multiple good experiences. At the same time, the restaurant is not without some flaws -- however, none have to do with the quality, taste, and preparation of the food. For Toscana, taste is the reason: crust, cheese, and toppings as well as the flavor of the oven, if this makes any sense. The crust is crisp and thin, paradoxically without being insubstantial. They say Chicago-style, but it isn't like those typically advertising under "Chicago-style" mantra (Giordano's, Malnati's). It is unique and delicious. Perhaps they'll redefine the style? Regardless, the sauce is magic and the cheese is LEGIT mozzarella. You'll understand when you try it. The apps aren't remarkable. This is a pizza place and they're mere accessories that fit. I'm not saying I don't order them, but they're clearly not the draw. I have not tried the pasta but if the marinara sauce is any indication, and they're prepared even half so well as the pizza, they're also a huge draw. In sum, these guys are serious about making what is for my mind the highest quality thin crust pizza in the greater South Bend area. Give them a chance and they'll have earned your repeat business. Having said that, there is one problem with this pizza place: delivery. They offer delivery; however, inconsistently at best. Over the past year once for every three times I called in delivery was available. At that point, delivery is not available more than it is available. Maybe, for the sake of their customers, they should pursue an alternative strategy: either not offering delivery, outsourcing to a third-party delivery service, or allocating more resources toward providing more consistently available delivery options as advertised. Even with the continuous delivery consistency problems in mind, the pizza is so good it still gets five stars.

Great food and wonderful hospitality. We tried both pizza and pastas & both were delicious! Definitely going to be a regular stop.

If you are at any athletic event @ ND Mike's Pizza is in within walking distance. Order a pie, wait the traffic out and finish off your day with a great Chicago Thin pie. We found it through Yelp and could not have been happier. Small, cozy and a great Host are worth the try!

I am a serious pizza-phile, This place makes incredible pizza. I like all styles of pizza. The style here is a relatively little-known Chicago thin-crust style (little-known, in that most people think of Chicago as deep-dish town). The bottom crust is somewhat toward the thin, crackery end of the spectrum--crisper than the NY style. that you might find at, say, Yummy Pizza. It's cut tavern-style into squares. The balance of elements in crust and toppings is perfection. (We ordered a large pizza margherita, the basic, simple test of a pizzaria.) It's just outstanding. I'm adding this place now to the other places in the region that I truly value: Giannettos (for Chicago deep dish, a wholly different animal); and Stop 50 in Michigan City, MI, and Venturi in Goshen, IN (both of which do Neapolitan-style, in wood-fired ovens). And happily, this place is not so far away from me.

My husband and I loved this place. Pizza was great quality. Crispy crust with just the right amount of density. Excellent ingredients - esp. the cheese! We ate in and loved the extra touch of parmesan cheese delivered to the table cold from the fridge. Even the box to carry out our leftovers was unique. Tastefully decorated restaurant was clean and so were the bathrooms. Now I want to try some of the other items on the menu!

I just recently got to know this place. Incredibly good food! Incredibly nice ownership and staff. It may take some time to get your food but what I've found is that it's because they want to make it right for you. Putting out a mediocre product is not on their agenda. Be patient. It's worth it.

We have been fans of Toscana since they moved to their Ironwood location, The pizza is incredible, the crust has a nice crisp snap...sauce isnt super acidic and has a nice deep tomato flavor. Mike the owner has a real eye for ingredients and uses great quality cheese and sausage...i have never had a bad pizza experience at Toscana, and the Italian Beef is really good as well, they use a Gonella roll, good quality giardiniera mix on top...the beef is tender and flavorful not dry at all. The fried parmesan potatoes are awesome..but get them when you dine in. They dont travel well. If you are looking for the best pizza in South Bend...look no further than Tosacana.

Spent Easter weekend with my family visiting my grandmother. Wanted to order pizza and wanted to try something other than Barnaby's. This place came up on our yelp search and the reviews were promising. Toscana didn't disappoint. The only downfall was that my GPS told me it was located on the wrong side of the street. Pizzas were just coming out of the oven as I walked up. The owners were beyond friendly- any place that offers me a 'God bless you' is somewhere that already has my business. The pizzas rocked. Crispy cracker-like thin crust, awesome sauce and fresh ingredients. We got a sausage pizza, cheese pizza and veggie- none disappointed. I look forward to trying some thing else on my next return! Don't miss these guys!

Tonight me and a buddy were out in south bend from out of town, saw this on Yelp and figured we'd give it a try. Had a little trouble finding it due to google maps being incorrect but besides the fact, we pulled up, the building was kind of smaller, we debated going in. We walked in and talked to a customer waiting for his order and he told us how amazing the food was and that he ordered at least once a week. We met Mike and his wife and they were such nice and cool people! We ordered a few large pizzas so we would have left overs and they were absolutely delicious. Had GCB appetizer and it as well was so good. The sauce on the pizza was just so full of flavor, you could tell they didn't crap open a can of sauce and put it on the pizza. EVERYTHING was HOT and fresh, my favorite topping on the pizza was the sausage, the taste and the different sizes showed you it was fresh cut and not some average pizza sausage. Overall pizza and service was great and if I lived in south bend I would file for bank and gain a lot of weight!! Outstanding pizza guys thanks! See you sometime soon! CCM stands for Canadian Cycle Machinery!!

I LOVE Toscano's! We are so lucky to be in walking distance to it! Their crust is yummy and we love the margherita pizza. I am always so surprised that they are never very busy.

Mike and his wife run a great locally owned pizza shop. Love the homemade cracker crust and sauce is perfect. Try the homemade meatballs too. They are to die for. Nice people who you want to give business to.

Best pizza in town. AMAZING service. I loved the crispy crust and the fresh ingredients. This will be my new go to spot for pizza!!! Excited to try the pasta next time. Oh and the romano chips are out of this world!!!

The owner Mike has been the most friendly and exceeds all expectations of service. I've ordered two pies from him now and they've been phenomenal! If you like "Pizza Hut" crap cuts beware...they serve a pie the way it should be served. If you're a garlic lover and don't order cheesy garlic bread for fear of not enough cheese or garlic, do not hesitate! There's enough garlic to keep Dracula away for 5 years and the cheese is just a bonus. So glad I've discovered this place. If you're ever not happy with the food they give you then you're probably just not happy with your life. They aim to please and they hit the bullseye!

This is one of my favorite places in the area and is one of my go-to dinner spots. I love their thin crust pizza and their salads too... plus, they have a great student discount! The owners and employees are so friendly and welcoming, and always come over to chat with us and see how we are doing.

Gotten pizza here twice now. The first time got the cheese pizza it was super good, though I really wanted their white sauce pizza but "my uncle forgot to make it for today" Though disappointed, I was super excited to find out they make their own white sauce, plus they gave us a free soda. 2nd time there, got the white sauce pizza. Sauce and toppings were spot on, the crust was a little too crispy, but it soften up in the fridge making a super good breakfast :). will be ordering again

First of all some of the nicest owners, I have ever met. Got a topping wrong on half of our pizza, and offered to make a new personal sized pizza for the person who's half was wrong. They also offered us complimentary beverages and a complimentary appetizer cheesy bread for being a first time customer. We ordered appetizer mozzarella sticks which were done to perfection, the marinara dipping sauce was excellent. The pizza was good, their known for Chicago style thin crust which basically means the toppings are under the cheese. The pizza was very good. I also ordered an Italian beef. This was definitely not the best, I have had just average. Recommended using more vegetables with hot pepper sauce, and maybe add a little vinegar. The sandwich was a little bland. I would definitely come back for the pizza and appetizers.

  • Rosemary B.

This was awful. Only had enough spaghetti for one serving. Had no chicken for chicken Parmesan. Spaghetti was served in a bowl because it was mostly sauce with a few noodles. Service was awful. One server and he was filling pizza orders. We will not return.

I work across the street, and we love ordering their pizza to share! Always so friendly. As a fan of thin crust pizza, Toscana is a treat to have so close. Being locally owned is just a plus!

My wife and daughters (ages 10 and 8) visited Toscana after the ND/NU football game (GO CATS!). Toscana was easy to find, the food was delicous, and the staff could not have been friendlier. The whole meal was $22. We started with a mixed salad ($6) with greens, olives, and mozzarella. We also ordered a large pizza which we could not finish. The pizza was better than any pizza available to us locally on the Upper West Side of NYC. We told one of the guys that and the owner's son came out and shook our hands. The sauce was a bit more spicy than pizzas we normally encounter. Wife and I loved it but the girls thought it was too spicy. The tables are covered with white butcher block paper and guests can draw pictures while they wait for their food. The patron behind us drew a picture of Brian Kelly with a thought balloon saying "I'm awful" and another with Joe Biden with his foot in his mouth. Highly entertaining!

I have been looking for a GOOD pizza joint since I moved to the area. I like Barnaby's, but sometimes a little variety is needed, so I gave this place a try. I ordered a cheese only pizza- I figure if they can make a GOOD cheese pizza then the rest of the pizzas should also be good. I liked it! A good sauce with a little zest, REAL mozzerella cheese that takes on a flavor from slow cooking in a REAL pizza oven! The owner, Mike, seems like a good guy and really seems to care about his business (and his customers!). I will definitly be going back- I can't wait to try their Meatball Sub and Margherita Pizza!!! Will post photos next time. *******************************Update: 7-18-13 Tried the spaghetti here and REALLY liked it! Good, rich, zesty sauce- I ordered a link of sausage and the it was good too! I'm really picky about sausage but this was very good! The owner says he simmered the sauce 10 hours before he served it. I may have found a new FAVORITE restaurant! *******************************Update: 7-23-13 Third visit- ...Had the Chicken Parmigiana tonight, it was great. This is home cooking! Nothing is pre-made, re-heated or held on a steam table. The chicken is freshly sautéed with a nicely seasoned breading, I got some spaghetti to go along with it, a fresh-made salad and a nice family atmosphere in the restaurant- see the photos.

Really a hidden treasure. Outstanding thin crust pizza. I reco the margherita. Seems to take a little longer than other pizza places, but usually worth the weight. If you're familiar with local fave Barnaby's or Tony Sacco's, imagine the best attributes of both and you have Toscana.

  • A B.

My wife and I went here with a friend after a recent ND game. I won't bore you with a long drawn out review. Simply put, this place was outstanding. If you are looking for a 5 star joint, look elsewhere. If you want a spectacular meal at a great price, this place is for you. Between the 3 in our party we had 2 chicken parms and a pasta meal. All were outstanding. The owner and his family are extremely friendly. His wife brought us homemade cannolli after our meal and his son Danny is a charming host. We even brought a 2 month old baby in with us and were accommodated without a hitch. We go to an ND game every year. From now on I will have all of my post-game meals at this establishment!

If the thought of cutting pizza into small squares instead of big beautiful triangular slices makes you cringe, avoid this place. I had hoped to order a pasta-and-salad lunch from Toscana for my staff, but I only tried to place my order at about 9:30am the morning of and they weren't able to fill it. My bad on that. I really liked the owner on the phone so I said, what the heck, let's try your pizza. When I came to pick up my pies, I watched the only worker in the place press and roll out some dough on a pizza pan instead of stretching it and tossing by hand. Not a good sign. When he cut off the over hanging edges with a pizza wheel I thought, yikes, this dough has got no elasticity. Sure enough, it came out of the oven with a saltine cracker texture. No rise whatsoever to the the crust. If that floats your boat, who am I to judge? But if that's not your thing, you gotta avoid this place. For me, it's heresy. I probably will go back and try their pasta dishes, so please consider this a pizza only review.

BIG. GIANT. YUM!! Fresh ingredients, friendly knowledgeable staff, clean surroundings, divine aromas, absolutely scrumptious taste. We came here on a Friday when our usual place was packed. The previous Yelp reviews were good, so we said WTH, why not? Good decision on our part. It IS a thin crust pizza (Chicago style) which I usually avoid given that at most places the crust texture resembles saltine crackers or the entire pie comes out over cooked or even burned. This was NOT THE CASE at Toscana. Their crust was perfectly textured, slightly chewy with a great flavor that was a perfect base for the plethora of fresh toppings. This could be our new favorite go to Friday pizza place. Now if they only served beer.... ;)

Found Toscana thanks to Yelp...simply awesome. They really lived up to the reviews. Best pizza in SB, hands down. Liked it so much I created an account just to review them. Fantastic sauce and crust, and they actually bake it long enough, unlike most pizza places around here. Classic Chicago style thin crust. So good! I've found my new favorite pizza place in town.

For anyone that appreciates delicious well made pizza this is the place for you. Reminds me more of a Barnabyesque pizza verses a Roccos or Cosimo and Susie's. I guess it doesn't have that extra garlicky kick but to each his own. I still think its a fantastic pizza and if you like a thin cracker crust they have it. Leaps and bounds above most locally owned pizza joints in the saint joe area. The owner is really nice and the son set me up with the pizza reward program and gave me stamps from the last time and nobody does that. Also really good meatballs.

As most others have written, the thin crust pizza is distinctive. My buddies swear by the meatball pizza. The prices are low! The attention paid to each order is high. The owner is heavily invested in making EVERYone satisfied. If you are looking for a local place to support, this is the one. I didn't give five stars as the pasta is hit or miss. It's a great bargain and it is never terrible. It's just not all that each time. Parking seems very limited, but there are spaces in the rear. The decor is spartan. Fine by me as they so obviously pour their capital into first-quality food. This place is a no-brainer to try at least once. It really is.

Wow. Let me say that backwards...Wow! This is one of those hidden gems in South Bend that should be busier than Barnaby's and Bruno's combined. With fresh ingredients, quality mozzarella cheese and fresh sausage, Toscana's should be your first stop for pizza in South Bend. Additionally, even with more quality, the prices are lower than Barnaby's and Bruno's. This place is family owned and the customer service makes you feel like you were adopted in their family. I recommend this to anyone who can read. Please disregard Noel's review. True Chicago pizza is cut into squares, not triangles. Additionally, a great thin-crust pizza is exactly how it is served at Toscana. It is hard to know the difference when most people grow up on Domino's. So there you go. I use to get my Pizza elsewhere, but now this is my go-to spot. The owner, Mike, and his son are friendly, and the pizza is excellent. It's the only place in town where I've been able to get a good Pizza Margherita. The price is good, the pizaa is excellent, service as friendly as it gets. And here's a tip: ask for a Toscanata. It's not on the menu, but it's maybe the best thing they make. Think fried calzone, but not heavy at all. UN-BE-LIEVABLE.

I was hosting a college group on a limited budget; the first two places I called weren't particularly interested. I dialed this place on a whim, and Mike was incredibly helpful and friendly. We were able to come up with a way to feed the students on the budget I had. Most importantly, it was a bargain, because the pizza was delicious, especially if (like I do) you like the thinner, almost New York-style stuff. This is well worth a visit, and we'll be coming back on our own.

Really good Italian food, great price. Had the fettucini alfredo- really good once we added salt and pepper margherita pizza- excellent, very thin crust. Though the cheesy, meaty pizza the owners were eating looked even better, Garlic bread- great (they bake their bread fresh daily) and a side salad which actually contained some non-iceburg lettuce and baby spinach. All for 17.50 (with a 20% student discount!) The owners really couldn't have been nicer, I'll definitely going to come back. They'll need to market to the off campus students (the ones on campus basically won't leave unless their parents are with them), but with that discount and good food they could be really popular.

We are new to South Bend, but have already had pizza delivered from here twice. The margherita pizza is PERFECT and addictive. Last time I had to get 2 large pizzas for two people because my boyfriend, who usually only eats 3 pieces in a sitting, ate almost an entire pizza both times. Lots of sauce, thin crust, dollops of mozzarella. I didn't time the delivery, but I think it was a reasonable amount of time. Nice delivery guy too.

Awesome pizza crust and breads Breads and crust made fresh-no distributor pre-made products here. The home made pasta was killer also. The owner has a passion for what he dose and it shows up in the food. Live in Wisconsin and would drive back just for the pizza weekly if we could. Fresh is best!!!!!!

The Pizza was awesome! Service was great! Mike the owner is a great guy and knows the food business. I recommend eat in, takeout or catering!

If you are at any athletic event @ ND Mike's Pizza is in within walking distance. Order a pie, wait the traffic out and finish off your day with a great Chicago Thin pie. We found it through Yelp and could not have been happier. Small, cozy and a great Host are worth the try!

This was awful. Only had enough spaghetti for one serving. Had no chicken for chicken Parmesan. Spaghetti was served in a bowl because it was mostly sauce with a few noodles. Service was awful. One server and he was filling pizza orders. We will not return.

I work across the street, and we love ordering their pizza to share! Always so friendly. As a fan of thin crust pizza, Toscana is a treat to have so close. Being locally owned is just a plus!

Pizza

Pizza is a famous Italian dish savored around the world. The entire credit for the popularity of Pizza in the United States goes to the chain of pizzerias all over the country. While the base and the texture of Pizza remains same across the globe, it's the toppings that differs from country to country. In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians. Other than these famous meat options, Pizzas with veg toppings such as mushrooms, pepperonis, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, etc. are also famous in most restaurants in the United States.

Irrespective of your locality, you will find a variety of different restaurants in your cities offering pizzas of all different types. Pizza is hot favorite among people of all ages in the United States. A large size pizza is enough to feed a family of 3 or 4 at large. Pizza is also the most preferred food whenever a group of friends is hanging out together. Pizza gained popularity in the United States after the American soldiers stationed in Italy returned from World War II.

Over the years, different pizzerias in the United States have developed their own respective regional variations. Pizza gained popularity as the iconic dish in the United States in the second half of the 20th century. Whether you prefer thin or thick crust pizza, you can find a pizza of your preference at the best pizza restaurants in your city.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
